PUNAM SPEAK

Two human beings have influenced me in my journey in ALF-Mrs. Kanan Shah and Ms. Divya Chaudhry. Divya used to take me along with her for her events and gradually I became a part of this beautiful family.

When I accompanied Divya, I realised I was in a new world full of happiness. I used to enjoy every minute and forget who I was and dance with the children, especially in Ghadge Dharamshala, listen to the stories of the elderly women in the old-age home; watch movies with the special children; and spend my Sundays with the children at Ghadge. I realized this is what I wanted to do and slowly ALF became the most important chapter of my life.

ALF is a blessing where I can refine my thoughts. I want to make every moment memorable and want to dedicate my life to all those who need me. My inspiration has been my husband, Navneet. I have seen him, in my 30 years of marriage, helping the needy selflessly, whether it is getting out of his car and helping a labourer with his loaded handcart or stopping young boys from smoking or helping the poor and needy with medical aid. I want to be like him.

My favourite memories are many, but when I did an event in my own school — Canossa Special School- my world was complete. I was in my school after 36 years!

The event at Saint Anthony’s old-age home is also very close to my heart. We danced with the ladies who were above 80 years of age. The Children’s Home in Umerkhadi was an eye-opener as well. The harsh realities of life, young children, mentally challenged children- we gave them their childhood back with music and dance.

ALF has been the most amazing journey in my life. All the angels have a positive approach and radiate such good vibrations. ALF has taught me many things which give me an immense sense of satisfaction. I want to ‘keep spreading Joy’, this is what I have learnt from ALF: In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years. I want to try and help as much as I can, because I am not going to be around forever. I want to make the coming years of my life the best years. Stay blessed and remember to take the time to count your blessings.
